My sister had slate floors installed several years ago. At first she had trouble keeping the floors from getting a sticky residue from the commercial cleaners she was using. She swears by a mixture of one gallon hot water and 1/2 teaspoon of dish soap. She then polishes the floor with a microfiber mop soaked in a 50/50 solution of water and milk. The mops with microfiber strings work best to get into all of the textures of the slate. After admiring her floors, my wife wants to replace our kitchen floors with slate. We were surprised at how well slate holds up to dirt and how easy it is to clean. If you are thinking of remodeling your kitchen, consider slate.
