What's in Oven and Drain Cleaners? - Lye

Most drain cleaners and oven cleaners contain Lye. Lye is made of either sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide. Lye is extremely corrosive and will burn skin on contact. Lye can easily burn your eyes and ingestion results in extreme damage to the esophagus and digestive system or death. I remember years ago that one of the drain cleaner companies released an aerosol dispersed cleaner. I don't remember the exact name, but I do remember that a large number of people were severely burned by the product. What do you do to avoid lye, use our tips for cleaning your oven and for removing clogs and read labels to insure that you buy products that don't contain lye.
