Our dog is always slobbering water all around her water dish and our cat is always leaving crumbs around his food dish. To help combat the mess and the possible damage from the water we put a small rubber mat under their dishes. You can find these at the pet store for under $10. You could also use an extra piece of carpet or an old door mat under the dishes.
